What happens between an artist’s planning study and a finished painting? An Evening with Artist Jie Wei Zhou offers Museum Friends a chance to consider that question with Zhou himself at Denver Art Museum on February 16, 2027.
Visitors will be able to see a planning study connected to Zhou’s Life in Denver’s Chinatown, Early 20th Century, as well as the completed painting in the museum’s collection. Seeing both gives the discussion a concrete focus: the relationship between an early working idea and the finished canvas.
Zhou joins Becca Goodrum, assistant curator of the Kirkland, for a conversation about his process. The museum says he will address the roles of research and imagination in his historical scenes and discuss how his techniques create atmosphere. A reception and time for audience questions are also planned.
