Patricia Lagarde’s photographs of things, in conversation at Denver Art Museum
A collection can tell one story to its owner and another to someone seeing it in a photograph. Patricia Lagarde’s work explores that shift in meaning, making her an apt guest for a Denver Art Museum conversation tied to What We’ve Been Up To: Things.
Pictures as objects, too
Lagarde, who lives and works in Mexico, examines the urge to collect and classify, whether the subject is commonplace or unusual. Across photographs, artist books and installations, she considers the memories and imagined stories that can attach to an object—and how those associations change with the viewer or setting.
The materials of her work offer another way into that practice. A 2012 work from Ars Combinatoria is a wet-collodion positive on aluminum, while her 2018 Tipología del Vacío combines a tintype with glass, wood and stone. They are examples of a practice that uses both historic and contemporary photographic processes, rather than a promised list of works for the conversation.

From the auditorium to the galleries
The conversation is presented alongside What We’ve Been Up To: Things, the third in a series drawn from the museum’s photography collection after exhibitions centered on landscapes and people. The show asks visitors to consider how a photographed object can become a symbol, a memory or a fragment of a larger story.
The exhibition is in the Martin Building, on level 6; the talk is in the Hamilton Building. It runs from November 22, 2026, through April 25, 2027, and is included with general admission. The museum lists a work from Lagarde’s Ars Combinatoria among the exhibition’s works.
