This portrait class treats ornament as part of the image, not just a frame around it. Participants will work with flowing lines, bold patterns and decorative details to make an Art Nouveau-inspired portrait.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, Teaching Artist Jackie Nelson leads a 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. session in which participants use ink and metallic accents to explore graceful lines, patterns and embellishment. The museum describes the activity as transforming a portrait, but the listing does not say whether participants should bring an image or what reference will be used. Ask Programs Manager Neely Simms before registering if that affects your plans.
All supplies are provided. OKCMOA’s general art-class information says its classes are suited to a range of experience, from beginners to seasoned artists; the portrait class itself is designed for adults 18 and older.

The workshop takes its cues from The Triumph of Nature: Art Nouveau from the Chrysler Museum of Art, on view at OKCMOA Oct. 31, 2026–Jan. 24, 2027. The exhibition brings 127 works—including furniture, jewelry, prints and paintings—to the museum, so the decorative language explored in class has a broader frame than portraiture alone.
Its five thematic sections include Japonisme, Siegfried Bing and the Maison de l’Art Nouveau, École de Nancy, The Triumph of Nature, and From Nouveau to Deco: The Triumph of Industry. Works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha and Aubrey Beardsley are among those featured. The exhibition draws primarily on gifts from Walter P. and Jean Chrysler, whose homes once displayed these works.
