The Nutcracker at Thalia Mara Hall: Jackson’s Ballet Connection
Thalia Mara Hall is more than the address for Ballet Mississippi’s Nutcracker: the venue is named for a figure whose work connected ballet to Jackson. The hall’s history says the Jackson Ballet Guild invited Thalia Mara in 1975 and credits her with bringing world-class ballet to Mississippi.
A hall with a ballet story of its own
Built in 1968 as Jackson Municipal Auditorium, the hall took Mara’s name in 1989. Her connection gives this December booking a local context: the ballet is being presented in a venue whose own history includes the development of ballet in Mississippi.
