A Seattle Center exhibition brings Dale Chihuly’s glass into galleries, a garden and a Glasshouse, with live demonstrations offering a look at the material in the making.

A finished glass sculpture and a furnace full of molten material offer two different ways to understand the same medium. At Chihuly Garden and Glass, visitors can move between Dale Chihuly’s long-term exhibition and the Community Hot Shop, where local artists demonstrate how they shape glass.
The eight indoor galleries bring together Chihuly’s drawings, glass works and installations, representing more than 40 years of experimentation with color, form and light. The venue’s exhibition plan names rooms including the Sealife Room, Persian Ceiling and Macchia Forest, giving visitors several distinct bodies of work to explore.
The Glasshouse centers on a 100-foot-long Chihuly sculpture in red, yellow and orange. Outside, the garden’s trees, plants and flowers were selected to complement the artwork. For the Seattle Center project, the team repurposed an existing building for the exhibition hall and added the garden and Glasshouse; Chihuly selected existing works and made new ones for the site.

At the Community Hot Shop, local artists gather molten glass from a furnace and shape it into an object. Watching that process offers a useful counterpoint to the completed gallery pieces, and a question-and-answer session follows the demonstration.
The Theater adds another view of Chihuly’s working process through short videos, interviews, glassblowing footage and recordings of installations around the world. Visitors interested in how large projects come together can use it alongside the live demonstration.

The Bar at Chihuly offers a different glimpse of the artist’s interests through objects from his personal collections, including accordions, ceramic dogs, bottle openers and cameras. It serves food and drinks, while the exhibition itself does not allow them inside.
