Seattle’s Altered Shoreline: A Walking Tour with David B. Williams
Seattle’s downtown waterfront is built on terrain the city reshaped: hills were removed, tide flats filled and the shoreline remade. This walk follows clues to that older landscape and considers how changes below the surface still affect the city today.
Following a changed landscape
The route’s subjects span more than one kind of evidence: remnants of the former downtown bluffs, the lost island of Seattle and subterranean fill. The tour examines how that fill continues to affect the modern landscape, connecting the history of making new ground with the terrain people encounter now.
That focus makes this a geology walk grounded in the city rather than a tour centered on waterfront buildings. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, the final date listed in Friends of Waterfront Park’s 2026 series.

A naturalist’s lens on city ground
David B. Williams is an author, naturalist and tour guide whose work connects geology with everyday life. That perspective fits a walk about both large-scale changes to Seattle’s topography and the effects of buried material beneath the present-day landscape.

Three traces of Seattle’s former terrain
The advertised subjects move from the old downtown edge to a lost island and buried fill, linking the shoreline’s past to the landscape above it today.
