Brockman Gallery at LACMA: South L.A.’s Art Network in Focus
A gallery can shape an art scene by making room for work to be created and shown, not only by putting work on its walls. That wider role—the Brockman Gallery’s place in South L.A.’s artistic network—is the subject of LACMA’s Nov. 19, 2026, walkthrough, led by exhibition curator Lauren Hanson and art historian Charmaine Branch.
A gallery’s influence reached beyond its exhibitions
Brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis founded the Brockman Gallery in South Los Angeles in 1967, in the aftermath of the Watts Rebellion. LACMA describes it as a place that championed Black artists and supported young artists of color.
The gallery helped nurture the early careers of David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson and Carrie Mae Weems. Their stories sit within a larger one: LACMA traces how the gallery helped artists make work, show it and gain cultural visibility. That history gives the walkthrough its focus on the connections around art as well as the artists themselves.

Documents and artworks tell the story together
LACMA’s The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990 is the museum’s first large-scale exhibition devoted to the gallery’s impact. It brings archival material together with more than 60 works across media, all connected to the Davises’ community-oriented project. Together, the records and artworks trace how the gallery fostered new work, exchange and cross-cultural ties.
The exhibition is scheduled to run from October 18, 2026, through January 24, 2027. The November walkthrough takes place during that presentation and combines a discussion of the gallery’s history with a tour of the exhibition.

A curator and an art historian lead the hour
From 4 to 5 p.m., Hanson and Branch lead a focused discussion about the Brockman Gallery’s history and impact alongside a tour of the exhibition. LACMA lists volunteer-led Public Tours separately in its November calendar; those tours are free with general admission and may be canceled.
