Dracula at Hartford Stage: A Shape-Shifting Ensemble Reworks Stoker
Hartford Stage’s Dracula puts the way people are judged alongside the supernatural menace of Bram Stoker’s story. Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s adaptation explores fear, desire, power and survival, using an ensemble that shifts form as part of its approach to the familiar gothic material.
A new perspective on a familiar gothic story
Adapted from Bram Stoker by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and directed by Jackson Gay, this is an American-premiere production. Hartford Stage describes Malcolm’s adaptation as a psychological exploration of the story; it previously drew acclaim in London for its contemporary perspective. The production’s emphasis is less on retelling familiar material as-is than on examining its ideas about fear, desire, power and survival.
The staging is described as ensemble-driven: performers shift shape, while language, sound and imagination help build the theatrical world. That gives visitors a useful sense of the production’s approach without prescribing how any particular scene unfolds.

The performers and the design team
The listed cast includes Scout Backus as Lucy/Ensemble, Sara Gutierrez as Mina and Lucas Dixon as Jonathan/Ensemble. Caitlin Elizabeth Clouthier, Anney Giobbe and Pauli are also credited in the ensemble. The Ensemble credits, alongside the production’s description of performers shifting form, point to a company working across more than a fixed set of single-character assignments.
Gay directs, with scenic design by Riw Rakkulchon, costume design by Fabian Fidel Aguilar, lighting by Paul Whitaker and sound by Caroline Eng. The wider team includes wig, hair and make-up designer Tommy Kurzman; fight director Rod Kinter; movement and intimacy coordinator Shura Baryshnikov; dialect and vocal coach Julie Foh; stage manager Avery Trunko; and assistant stage manager Theresa Stark.
