A midwifery student’s search for answers drives The Maverick’s Midwife, Ellie Rose Mattoon’s novel about childbed fever and a forbidden partnership in a Vienna maternity ward. Mattoon joins Dr. Maya J. Sorini at Bird in Hand Coffee & Books on November 13 for a conversation about medical history and writing fiction.
Anna Maier, the novel’s midwifery student, has lost her sister to childbed fever and distrusts medical men. When obstetrician Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis begins investigating the disease, Anna joins him discreetly, hoping the work will explain her sister’s death.
Their partnership crosses gender boundaries and defies hospital rules. It also takes Anna into anatomy theaters where she is otherwise surrounded by men. That tension gives the novel a way to explore who can participate in medical inquiry as well as the questions the inquiry seeks to answer.

Mattoon is both a writer and a medical student, and her debut draws on research into women in Vienna’s maternity ward. Her conversation with Sorini is framed around the history of medicine and the craft of bringing the past to life through writing.
Bird in Hand has a connection to the book beyond hosting its author: the idea for the novel began there. For readers interested in historical fiction, the discussion offers a chance to consider how research and an invented character’s perspective meet in a story.
