Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. No event-specific end time is stated. A pre-concert talk is scheduled one hour before most performances; the DSO describes these talks as 30 minutes. The Sunday 3:00 p.m. performance is also listed online.
A tribute to a mother and portraits of friends give Enigma Variations & Britten a personal thread. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra pairs those works by Clyne and Elgar with Britten’s Piano Concerto for two performances at Orchestra Hall, one of which is also available to watch online.
Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms honors her late mother; Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations depicts people in his circle of friends. Elgar’s set includes “Nimrod,” a familiar point of entry for listeners approaching the larger work.
For Benjamin Britten’s Piano Concerto, Leif Ove Andsnes joins the orchestra as soloist. The DSO notes that he has championed the concerto for years; his season also includes performances of it with other orchestras. Conducting is Tabita Berglund, the DSO’s principal guest conductor, who trained as a cellist before turning her focus to conducting.

The DSO’s pre-concert talks offer a way to hear more about the composers and music before listening. The orchestra schedules a 30-minute talk an hour before PVS Classical performances except Friday morning Coffee Concerts. Seating for the talks is general admission, so attendees can try a different part of Orchestra Hall from their concert seats.
For a closer view of the piano soloist, the DSO suggests seats on the floor; an upper level offers a broader view of the orchestra and its sections. Its Performance magazine also provides program information for the classical series.
