At the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, a woodcut by Käthe Kollwitz shares an exhibition with images from films such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis. Exhibition Tour: The Age of Anxiety offers a guided introduction to that encounter between art and film on October 31, 2026.
Looking across the gallery and the screen
The Age of Anxiety: German Expressionism in Art and Film considers Germany in the political and economic upheaval following World War I. Its pairing of paintings and graphic works with film images gives visitors a way to think about how artists and filmmakers responded to the tensions of their time.
The museum points to films including The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu and Metropolis. Their images appear alongside works in different media, among them Kollwitz’s 1920 woodcut on paper, In Memoriam Karl Liebknecht, on loan from the collection in Berlin’s Willy-Brandt-House.

A selection, not a complete survey
A docent will lead visitors through several selected works and introduce the exhibition’s themes. The museum does not name the individual tour stops, so Kollwitz’s woodcut is an example of a work in the exhibition, not a promised stop.
Afterward, there is time to look independently: the museum’s Saturday hours extend to 5 p.m. The exhibition remains in the Harriet and Warren Stephens Family Gallery through January 10, 2027.
