Paweł Pawlikowski’s historical drama follows a fictionalized 1949 road trip by writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika. OKCMOA presents five Noble Theater screenings from Nov. 13–19, plus a Watch At Home option beginning Nov. 13.

A 1949 drive from eastern Germany toward the occupied West gives Fatherland a route through the country’s postwar ruins—and a way to consider what it has yet to confront.
The travelers are writer Thomas Mann, played by Hanns Zischler, and his daughter Erika, played by Sandra Hüller. The trip is fictionalized, but its setting connects their family relationship to a Germany still reckoning with wartime destruction and responsibility for the war’s crimes.
Director Paweł Pawlikowski, whose films include Ida and Cold War, won Best Director at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The OKCMOA listing also identifies cinematographer Łukasz Żal; the film is presented in black and white.
