Introduction to Dye Painting on Textiles with Bethany Hwang in Pittsburgh
A painted design can add color to cloth without sacrificing its drape. That possibility is at the center of Introduction to Dye Painting on Textiles, a six-session course with Bethany Hwang at Contemporary Craft’s Beth Wainwright Dye Lab.
Making color part of the fabric
Hwang’s beginner course introduces the preparation and use of fiber-reactive dyes on natural fibers. Students learn to mix dye pastes and work on fixing the color to the fabric, while thinking about how to plan for the results they want.
The distinction between painting with dye and simply applying color to a surface matters here: fiber-reactive dyes form a chemical bond with fiber molecules. Contemporary Craft says that, when properly fixed, the color resists fading from washing and light. Dye painting can also leave the fabric’s natural feel and drape intact.

From paste to finished paintings
Participants can expect to make one to three finished dye paintings on cotton, with the number depending on the scale of their work. The aim is not just to leave with finished pieces, but to build a foundation in mixing paste and planning a dye-painted design that students can continue to explore on their own.
Hwang will share her interest in color and painting throughout the series. The course is intended for beginners, so prior dye-painting experience is not required.

What happens if Contemporary Craft cancels the workshop?
If the workshop is canceled because of insufficient enrollment, the organizer says the full class fee can be refunded through Eventbrite or left in the participant’s Contemporary Craft account for a future workshop.
