Introduction to Knitting: Beginner Basics with Kelly Mulligan in Pittsburgh
Kelly Mulligan’s Introduction to Knitting: Beginner Basics begins before the first stitch: participants learn how to hold their needles and yarn. The November 7 workshop at Contemporary Craft’s Timmons Studios is designed for people who have never knitted before.
Learning the structure of a piece
Mulligan guides the class through making a slip knot and casting on, then introduces knit and purl stitches and casting off. The lesson covers both ends of a piece of knitting as well as the stitches worked between them; it is presented as an introduction to the process rather than a named finished project.
Mulligan knits and crochets and has also explored mending, natural dyes and wet felting. Outside fiber art, she works full time in a library and occasionally practices astrology.

Contemporary Craft says student refund requests require at least three business days’ notice and carry a $25 cancellation fee. Eventbrite also displays a seven-day refund deadline, so check with the organizer if the timing matters to your booking.

Entrances and the Fibers Loft
The class meets in the second-floor Fleischner Family Fibers Loft at Contemporary Craft’s Timmons Studios, 5688 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201.
