Kim’s Convenience at IRT: a Toronto family story with room for conversation
Mr. Kim’s convenience store has been a fixture in Toronto’s Regent Park for more than 30 years. In Kim’s Convenience, the first-generation Korean immigrant faces a neighborhood being reshaped by development and children whose ambitions differ from his own.
From the store counter to the stage
Ins Choi’s play found an audience at the Toronto Fringe Festival before becoming a Netflix series. At Indiana Repertory Theatre, the story returns to its theatrical form, balancing comedy with questions about family expectations and a changing neighborhood.
The production is directed by cara hinh, IRT’s associate artistic director. Tony K. Nam plays Appa, Jenny S. Lee plays Janet, Tuyết Thị Phạm plays Umma and Jae Woo plays Jung. Austin Michael Young takes several roles, including Rich and Mr. Lee.

Two ways to stay for a discussion
The October 30 performance is followed by a Community Conversation moderated by hinh. Its subject is Black and Asian solidarity, including histories of coalition and tensions between communities—a discussion that reaches beyond the play’s Toronto setting.
For a closer look at the production itself, staff-led Artist Conversations follow selected performances on November 1, 6 and 11. These typically run about 30 minutes and explore the work of the people who make the show.

A market in the Cabaret
On November 8, IRT and Asianapolis host a free market featuring Asian and Asian American businesses and creators, along with games. It takes place in the third-floor IRT Cabaret in two periods, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m., around the day’s performances.
The market is free; admission to Kim’s Convenience requires a separate show ticket.
