The Fifth Step brings a fraught sponsorship to the screen
A newcomer to Alcoholics Anonymous asks an older member to be his sponsor in The Fifth Step. The request sets up a close-quarters drama in which the person offering guidance becomes a subject of scrutiny too.
Two men in a meeting room
Lowden plays Luka, who is new to AA, opposite Freeman as James, his sponsor. Ireland places their encounters near the confessional stage of AA’s 12-step program, as Luka faces the harm his addiction has caused.
Both actors remain onstage throughout, with the action confined to a meeting-room set. That focus gives their arguments over boundaries room to shift: the play examines not only what Luka asks of James, but also the expectations placed on a person entrusted with influence.
The production combines comedy with unsettling material. Lowden returns to the role he played at the Edinburgh International Festival; Freeman takes the part of James, originally played in Scotland by Sean Gilder.
