Niladri Kumaar’s Sandy Springs concert looks back to a musical partnership while placing it in a new setting. The sitarist’s The Space Between the Notes honors the late Zakir Hussain, with whom he frequently collaborated, through music connected to their final recording together.
A duo’s music, played in an ensemble
The recording captures a live concert Kumaar and Hussain gave in Mumbai. Also titled The Space Between the Notes, it was planned for release in 2026. The Sandy Springs program combines works from that recording with Kumaar’s own compositions and interpretations; it is a tribute rather than a promised recreation of the recorded concert.
Kumaar, whose work is rooted in Indian classical music, will be joined by Agnelo Fernandes on keys, Sambit Chatterjee on drums and Satyajit Talwalker on tabla. That lineup gives the tribute a different instrumental frame from the original duo and places the shared material alongside Kumaar’s individual work.
