In 1967 Tulsa, Ponyboy Curtis and his Greaser family are on one side of a conflict with the wealthier Socs. The musical adaptation brings that coming-of-age story to Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre, drawing on both S.E. Hinton’s novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s film.
Ponyboy grows up on the Greaser side of Tulsa’s divide, where clashes with the better-off Socs shape daily life. Against that pressure, his coming-of-age story turns on family ties, finding a place to belong, and the possibility of choosing a different future.
Baltimore is the musical’s tour stop; the story itself is set in Tulsa in 1967.

The production’s credits bring together writers, composers and choreographers from different parts of the stage work. Adam Rapp and Justin Levine share book credit; Jamestown Revival and Levine are credited with the original score. Rick and Jeff Kuperman choreographed the musical, and Tony Award winner Danya Taymor directs.

The downtown theater opened in 1914 as a movie theater and performance space, then closed in 1990. Renovation and rebuilding brought it back as a full performance theater in 2004, when it became part of the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center. That history connects the current musical engagement to a venue that has served more than one kind of audience and stage.
