At Contemporary Craft’s Timmons Studios, a beginner workshop trades a finished project for practice with machines, safety and the preparation of a rough-sawn board.

All times are local to the venue · America/New York
The pieces participants take home from Woodworking 101 with David Bielewicz will be samples, not a completed piece of furniture. That distinction is the point: the three-hour class concentrates on preparing lumber and getting acquainted with the woodshop before moving on to a project.
Students will use the wood studio’s core machines to learn how a rough-sawn board becomes dimensional lumber. Milling is a preparatory step for many woodworking projects, so the class offers a way to encounter that process on its own rather than trying to learn it while completing a named object.
The beginner-focused lesson also introduces the studio, its tools and safety considerations. Participants leave with several sample pieces from their work—a practical record of the skills covered and an alternative for someone who wants to try woodworking before signing up for a project-based workshop.

Bielewicz’s introduction to woodcraft came through an apprenticeship in carving and painting with his grandfather in New York’s Finger Lakes region. In Pittsburgh, he studied stagecraft, theater and construction at Point Park University, trained through the Carpentry Union’s KML Carpenters school and studied woodworking fundamentals at the Backchannel School of woodworking.
He has owned the Pittsburgh woodworking business Uncommon Craftsmen since 2021. His class at Timmons Studios brings that background to a session intended for people at the beginning of their own woodshop education.
