Behind the Baton LIVE: DIVA brings music and conversation to Denver Art Museum
A diva can be an opera star, a cultural force or both. Behind the Baton LIVE: DIVA, The Sound of Style takes up that changing idea through music, images and conversation at the Denver Art Museum on November 17, 2026.
A musical conversation about influence
O’Neil and Harmon begin with opera figures including Maria Callas, then trace how the idea of a diva grew beyond a description of exceptional talent. Their announced themes include self-expression, independence, civil rights and performers’ cultural influence.
The format joins O’Neil’s work as a conductor and educator with Harmon’s role as a museum interpretive specialist. Live keyboard playing and musical demonstrations sit alongside visual storytelling and discussion, with time for audience questions. It is a 90-minute exploration rather than a concert built around a published setlist.

What the exhibition adds
The program draws inspiration from DIVA, organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and adapted by the Denver Art Museum for an American audience. Its roughly 250 objects consider how performers have used costume and dress to shape their visibility, from figures such as Josephine Baker and Callas to Lady Gaga and Prince.
The exhibition follows the diva from opera to the screen in one section and considers how more recent stars have embraced the term in another. It offers a visual counterpart to the live program’s music and conversation, but it is a separate visit in the Hamilton Building.
