Darrell Riche’s six-session drawing course brings still-life observation together with lessons informed by paintings in the museum’s European galleries.

Drawing a convincing object involves more than tracing its outline. In Drawing: Rendering the Real, teens and adults build on basic skills to explore how shading, perspective and composition can give objects and spaces form on the page. The fall 2026 course at The Joslyn Art Museum is closed to registration.
Teaching artist Darrell Riche guides students through more advanced rendering using still-life arrangements as subjects. Working from observation gives the class a way to study value—the range of light and dark—as well as the forms of objects and the space around them.
Class critiques provide detailed feedback, so the course combines individual drawing practice with a chance to consider how those choices are working. It is designed to build on basic drawing skills rather than introduce drawing from the beginning.

Paintings in The Joslyn’s European galleries inform the lessons as students use graphite and charcoal to draw realistic objects and spaces. The gallery connection places their own rendering alongside examples in the museum’s collection, while the still lifes provide subjects to study directly.
