A café can offer a shifting subject for an artist: people and their surroundings, observed in the moment. Painting on a Whim! (Teens & Adults) brings that idea into a class at Omaha’s Joslyn Art Museum, where students use their observations as starting points for drawings and paintings.
Bennett’s class begins its exploration in the galleries, with artists who represented city life and social settings. Students then sketch people and scenery in The Cafe before returning to the studio to develop their initial impressions into more finished work.
That sequence gives the group two ways to study a social setting: through artists’ representations in the galleries and through direct observation at the museum. The class meets over five evenings, though individual activities are not assigned to specific dates.

The techniques include gesture drawing, which attends to movement and form, and alla prima painting, in which paint is worked directly while still wet. Both fit the class’s emphasis on responding to an immediate scene before developing the work further.
The listed media include graphite and ink for drawing, as well as watercolor, gouache and acrylic paint. The event does not specify whether students need to bring supplies, so registered participants should check with the museum.
