Bistros, dance halls and cabarets all have a place in Café Society, Joslyn Art Museum’s exhibition on Parisian sociability and modern art. A French + English public tour on November 1, 2026, offers a way into that history through conversation about selected works.
Café Society: Art and Sociability in Paris, 1855–1914 considers the French café in several forms, from bistros and brasseries to cafés-concerts, dance halls and cabarets. Its focus is not just where people gathered, but how such places became settings for artistic exchange and experimentation.
Paintings, drawings and prints show the subject’s appeal to French and expatriate artists. The exhibition includes work by Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and James Tissot, among others.

Gallery Volunteers facilitate the French + English tour, discussing a selection of works rather than delivering a published artwork-by-artwork itinerary. The museum has not named the pieces that will be discussed, so the exhibition’s artist list should not be taken as a tour checklist.
The exhibition remains in Scott Pavilion, Galleries S1–3, through January 17, 2027. Those dates describe the exhibition itself, not a recurring schedule for this particular tour.
