LACMA Mediterranean Sea Gallery Tour: Damascus to Lauren Halsey
A restored 18th-century reception room from Damascus and a sphinx by contemporary artist Lauren Halsey mark two ends of LACMA’s Mediterranean Sea gallery tour. The seven-work selection is meant to draw connections across periods and places; the museum names those two examples, not a complete stop-by-stop itinerary.
Two named works, seven stops
The Mediterranean Sea is one of four sections in LACMA’s David Geffen Galleries. For this docent-led tour, the museum selects seven works from its collection as prompts for looking across different times and geographies.
The published description identifies a restored 18th-century reception room from Damascus, Syria, and Lauren Halsey’s sphinx, Untitled (2026). Their chronological and geographic distance gives a sense of the range the tour intends to consider, but LACMA does not identify the other five works or promise a particular order.

A new gallery setting
LACMA opened the David Geffen Galleries in 2026. Pritzker Prize–winning architect Peter Zumthor designed the building, which the museum says uses natural light and frames views of Los Angeles. The tour places its collection-wide comparisons within one section of this recently opened gallery building.
