Gods in Living Color examines the devotional prints of colonial India
A printing boom in Calcutta, now Kolkata, made images of Hindu gods available in a reproducible form. In Gods in Living Color, Laura Weinstein considers what those devotional prints meant for art and religious life in colonial India. Her James C. Meade Lecture takes place at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art on November 11, 2026.
When images could circulate
The lecture focuses on the growth of lithographic devotional printing in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Calcutta. Mass production made religious images more accessible and gave devotees another way to encounter their gods in daily life.
That makes the medium part of the story: the talk connects how images were reproduced with the ways people could use and live with them. Its subject is both a chapter in South Asian art history and a way of thinking about the reach of religious imagery beyond a single original work.

A curator’s perspective
Weinstein is the Ananda Coomaraswamy Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Among her projects there is Divine Color: Hindu Prints from Modern Bengal, an exhibition closely related to the Oklahoma City lecture’s subject. She has also led the reinstallation of the museum’s South Asian, Southeast Asian and Islamic art collections.
The event is a lecture in the James C. Meade series, which brings speakers including curators, critics and collectors to the Noble Theater to discuss visual art. It is a chance to hear a curator address the history of the prints rather than an announced exhibition of those works.
