A word for someone in your family can be both a piece of a story and the beginning of a pattern. At Joslyn Art Museum’s Homeschool Days, families explore that idea through a gallery visit and hands-on art stations on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Looking for stories in everyday things
The October program centers on Sadie Barnette’s exhibition, where families can consider how the artist uses words, images and ordinary objects to tell stories. At the Words & Wonder Art Cart, hands-on materials invite visitors to think about words that call up relationships and memories of their own.
The museum describes Barnette’s work across media as an exploration of personal narratives alongside shared histories. Her Joslyn exhibition, in the Scott Pavilion’s Riley CAP Gallery S8, considers the significance that everyday moments can hold and remains on view through January 3, 2027.

One word, many impressions
In Word Play, Teaching Artist Therese Straseski guides a printmaking activity using foam sheets. Participants press words into the foam, ink the resulting plates and make prints, trying out repetition, rotation and layering. The process lets a chosen word work as both language and an element in a visual composition.
At Rainbow Dots: Celebration Buttons, Gallery Teachers help families make a button with colored pencils, layered dots and meaningful words. Both activities draw on the exhibition’s attention to the people and moments that shape a story, but offer different ways to respond: one through printed pattern, the other in a small wearable design.
