Kwaidan brings four Japanese ghost stories to Oklahoma City
A face appears in a warrior’s teacup; a blind musician is called upon to perform for apparitions. These are two of the encounters in Kwaidan, Kobayashi’s four-part film of supernatural tales, showing at the museum’s Noble Theater around Halloween.
Four encounters with the supernatural
Kwaidan adapts tales by Lafcadio Hearn, the Greek Irish writer who settled in Japan in the late 19th century. His stories drew on Japanese folklore, and Kobayashi’s film gives each of its four encounters a different setting and premise.
A samurai returns to the wife he left behind, while a young woodcutter meets a snow maiden. Elsewhere, a blind musician is summoned to sing about a sea battle, and a warrior discovers an unfamiliar reflection in his tea. Together, the stories move from intimate reckonings to a performance for the dead.

A soundstage world
Kobayashi shot Kwaidan in color and widescreen on theatrical soundstages with hand-painted scenery. That constructed visual approach is a distinctive part of the film’s setting for its ghost stories.
The Oscar-nominated film also won the Jury Prize at Cannes. OKCMOA presents the original three-hour cut in a 4K DCP restoration, with Japanese dialogue and English subtitles.
