Furniture and glass from Nancy, France, give Lloyd DeWitt a way into the collecting interests of Walter P. and Jean Chrysler. His lecture is part of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art’s members’ preview of The Triumph of Nature on Friday, October 30, 2026.
A collection with a French focus
DeWitt’s lecture follows the Chryslers’ interest in furniture, glass and decorative arts from Nancy, a center of French Art Nouveau in the northeastern region of Lorraine. He will discuss the city’s craftspeople and the collection’s growth around figures including Louis Majorelle and Émile Gallé.
The speaker knows the exhibition from an earlier stage: at the Chrysler Museum, where he served as curator and chief curator, DeWitt developed an installation of The Triumph of Nature. He is now curator of European and American art at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon.

From private homes to five gallery themes
The exhibition draws primarily on the Chryslers’ gifts to the Chrysler Museum of Art; the couple once displayed the works in their homes. Its 127 pieces range across paintings, prints, jewelry and furniture, bringing fine and decorative arts into the same exhibition.
Five thematic sections offer different routes through the material. Visitors can look for sections on Japonisme and the École de Nancy, as well as one tracing the shift from Art Nouveau toward Art Deco and industry. Artists represented include Louis Comfort Tiffany, Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha and Aubrey Beardsley.
