Seattle’s year-round Saturday market grew from an effort to connect city shoppers with family farms. Its food-only focus still shapes a visit.

Long before Neighborhood Farmers Markets operated across Seattle, a group of volunteers started with one market in the University District. Founded in 1993, University District Farmers Market remains a place to buy from local farmers and food makers on the Ave, the neighborhood’s name for University Way NE.
The original aim was to support local family farms and connect city residents with food produced nearby. The nonprofit that grew out of that effort now runs seven Seattle markets, all restricted to local farmers and food vendors rather than crafts.
The organizer describes University District as Seattle’s oldest and largest farm-and-food-only market. Some farmers and food artisans have been part of it since its beginning, or close to it; at peak season, the market has more than 80 booths.

Across the organizer’s markets, fruit and vegetable farms form the core, joined by other farms and food artisans who cook, bake and ferment using Washington-grown ingredients. The mix at University District changes from week to week, so those broader categories are a guide to the organization’s approach, not a guaranteed shopping list for a particular Saturday.
Buying directly also gives shoppers a chance to ask farmers about their practices. The organizer says not all of its farmers are certified organic: some use other certifications or choose not to pursue third-party certification, while some use non-organic chemicals. If a particular growing method matters to you, ask at the farm’s booth.
For a specific vendor or product, check with the Market Manager tent. The organizer cautions that last-minute changes can outpace its online lists and maps.

In the market’s early years, UD Food Bank staff created Helping Harvest vouchers so clients could buy food at the market while farmers received payment. Other Seattle food banks later established voucher programs with Neighborhood Farmers Markets.
Shoppers can also contribute through Buy Some / Share Some: buy extra produce and leave it at the Manager’s Tent for a local food bank to pick up at the end of the market day. The organizer accepts all produce for the partnership.
